A most employable Business student
In 2014, VU Bachelor of Business
student Sally-Anne Young was not
only named among Australia's most
employable students at the inaugural
GradConnection Top100 Awards, but
placed in the top fve in the Business
and Commerce category.
Sally is now completing her
Bachelor of Business, majoring
in Supply Chain and Logistics
Management, with a 10-month
internship at Coles.
The Awards -- which recognise
Australia's most employable future
graduates across the Accounting and
Finance, Commerce, Engineering,
Information Technology and Marketing
disciplines -- assess nominees not just on
academic results, but also on leadership,
volunteering, sports, travel and work
experiences acquired during their degree.
Having completed the Victorian
Certifcate of Education (VCE) in 2005,
and then working in a number of
administrative roles before returning
to study, Young took advantage of VU’s
fexible learning options when she
enrolled in 2013.
‘I was nervous starting my degree as I
hadn’t studied since leaving school seven
years earlier; however, it quickly became
a very positive experience for me. I chose
Victoria University because I knew it was
known for hands-on learning and lecturers
who actually work in the industries in
which they teach. Their willingness to
spend extra time working with me on
topics I found diffcult defnitely enhanced
my learning experience.
‘In my fnal year of study, I am
completing a 10-month internship at
Coles, working with the Supply Chain
team. In this position, I found the skills
taught to me at Victoria University vital
in achieving success.’
Aspiring to be a Supply Chain
Manager for a global company,
she says that the recognition by the
GradConnection Top100 Awards was
the 'icing on the cake' for her hard work.
‘I believe that textbooks can only
teach you so much, and that hands-on
learning is by far the best and most
effective way to gain current knowledge
of the industry; this is why I want to
participate in a summer internship and
eventually a graduate program.
‘When I refect on my time at
Victoria University, I feel that I have
gained skills and knowledge to lay the
foundation for a fruitful and exciting
career in business.'
Work Integrated Learning awards
Each year, the Centre for Work
Integrated Learning (WIL) recognises
several students who engage in a variety
of Work Integrated Learning activities
and events throughout the year.
The students recognised in 2014
not only found the experience highly
rewarding, but some have also found
themselves launched into success
beyond their expectations.
Event Management Award recipient
Luke Renehan is one who found himself
quickly climbing the ladder of success.
'My Work Integrated Learning
experience with Key Person of
Infuence allowed me to run major
promotional events around Australia
for over 600 people. Within a year,
I was promoted to National Events
Producer responsible for the planning
and delivery of over 250 events a year.
I even hired another VU student to
join the events team of four that I now
manage,' Renehan says.
Likewise, Urbano Laa, who received
the Banking and Finance Award, gained
valuable experience that allowed him to
apply the skills and knowledge acquired
at VU and further his career prospects.
‘I never believed I could achieve
my dream to work for a big global
investment bank on Collins Street.
From the moment I shifted my attitude,
my dream was accomplished. Work
Integrated Learning at ANZ opened
these doors for me,' he said after
receiving the award.
Marketing Award winner Emma
Landolina feels that the program
provided a valuable opportunity to get
ahead, saying, ‘I have been fortunate to
meet countless professionals and form
strong networks, which will be of utmost
value in my future’.
For Accounting Award winner
Katherine Pham, the 'Work Integrated
Learning experience allowed me to
bridge the gap between university and
my professional career, and gave me a
taste of what my career would be like.
‘I am now equipped with relevant
work experience and a range of skills
that you cannot learn from textbooks'.
